Politics

Today is the US presidential election. Everyone knows Obama and McCain have been campaigning hard for months. By the end of today we will know who will be the next president of the USA.

So here's what I found fascinating. Canada has elected a conservative Prime Minister. Alberta is known for being a conservative province. However, on a Calgary news website they have a poll. As of my writing this blog the results look like this:

Who do you think is the best choice for President of the United States?

John McCain 24%
Barack Obama 61%
Don't care 15%

So where were all these democratic voters in our election last month??????

Tell me about it. Sometimes I think I should move out of Alberta just so I can live somewhere where I can vote for a party that has even a slight hope of winning.

It's also important to note that in our system we're electing local representatives, not one leader. And in the case of the second largest party in the parliament, the leader is a bit of a moron.

And as I said before (and I stick by this), a lot of people like Obama as a person/celebrity/charismatic figure, or perhaps even feel he's a good leader, and thus would vote for him, not due to his Democratic policies, but due. Let's face it, Harper is a better leader than Dion would've been.

And people may think that a leftward shift is needed in the US, but not in Canada (as we're already further left than the US).

(I could go on, but I won't.)

The majority in Alberta voters did not vote in Stelmach, and the majority of Canadian voters did not vote in Harper.

Look at the popular vote for both elections and you may find the results are similar to the poll results in your post.
